I bet when you hear “Mad as a Hatter” your fist thought is Johnny Depp in Alice in Wonderland. You’re not wrong; but this is not where the phrase originated from. It’s actually an old English saying to describe someone who’s crazy or prone to unpredictable behaviors.
In the 18th and 19th century hat makers used mercury to turn fur into felt for hats. Prolonged exposure to the Mercury resulted in mercury poisoning. The hat makers developed both physical and mental issues as a result such as tremors, which were referred to as “hatter shakes”, speech problems, emotional instability and hallucinations.
Even knowing the risks that they faced, hat makers followed their dream and created beautiful, artistic hats. Maybe their emotional instability and unpredictable behaviors gave them the courage to follow their passion and create out of the ordinary hats.
